Biotin shows up in many hair, skin, and nail supplements, often in amounts far above the daily amount needed for basic nutrition. That does not automatically mean the product is unsafe, but there is one practical issue every beauty-supplement shopper should know: biotin can interfere with certain laboratory tests and produce inaccurate results.

This matters because a healthcare professional may not know you are taking a beauty gummy unless you tell them. “It’s just a vitamin” is not enough information when a lab test is being interpreted.

What is biotin?

Biotin is a B vitamin involved in normal metabolism. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists an adequate intake of 30 micrograms per day for adults. Most people obtain enough from food, and the NIH notes that evidence supporting extra biotin for hair, skin, or nail improvement in people who are not deficient is limited.

Beauty supplements may contain much larger amounts than the basic daily requirement because they are formulated as concentrated supplements rather than food.

How much biotin is in Magic Vitamin beauty products?

Current Magic Vitamin product information lists:

  • Make My Skin Glow: 5,000 mcg of biotin per two-gummy serving.
  • Beauty Bloom Gummies: 2,500 mcg of biotin per two-gummy serving, along with hydrolyzed collagen, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc.
  • Better Hair Days: includes biotin as part of its broader vitamin blend. The current website description does not state the biotin amount, so check the physical Supplement Facts label for the exact quantity.

These numbers are useful because the issue with laboratory testing is related to the amount of biotin in your system—not whether the supplement is marketed as a “hair vitamin” or “skin gummy.”

Why can biotin affect blood tests?

Some laboratory assays use biotin-based technology as part of the testing method. Extra biotin circulating in the blood can interfere with those systems and cause certain results to appear falsely high or falsely low.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has specifically warned that biotin can significantly interfere with some lab tests. One important example involves certain troponin tests used in the evaluation of possible heart attacks. The exact risk depends on the assay, the biotin exposure, and timing.

This does not mean every blood test is affected, and it does not mean you should independently stop a supplement for a fixed number of hours. Different tests and clinical situations can require different instructions.

What should you do before a blood test?

Tell the healthcare professional what you take

Bring a current list of supplements, not only prescription medications. Include the product name and, when possible, the amount of biotin on the label.

Tell the laboratory staff when relevant

If you are having testing done, mention biotin-containing supplements. This information can help the clinical team interpret results or choose an appropriate testing method.

Do not invent your own “washout” period

You may see online advice telling everyone to stop biotin for the same number of hours or days. That is too simplistic. The right instruction can depend on the product, dose, test, laboratory method, and urgency of the test. Follow the advice of the healthcare professional ordering the test.

In an emergency, do not delay care

If you have symptoms that require urgent medical attention, seek care. Tell the medical team about biotin use rather than waiting at home for a supplement to “clear.”

Biotin overlap matters when combining beauty supplements

If you use more than one beauty supplement, check for duplicated nutrients. For example, Make My Skin Glow and Beauty Bloom Gummies together list 7,500 mcg of biotin per their stated servings, before considering any biotin from Better Hair Days or other products.

That number is not presented here as a diagnosis or a personal safety judgment. It simply shows why adding products together without comparing Supplement Facts can produce a very different total intake than looking at one bottle at a time.

Our guide, Can You Take Hair, Skin & Collagen Supplements Together?, explains how to check overlapping ingredients across a beauty routine.

What about biotin’s beauty benefits?

Biotin deficiency can affect hair, skin, and nails, but true deficiency is uncommon. The NIH notes there is limited scientific evidence that high-dose biotin supplements improve hair, skin, or nails in people who already have adequate biotin status. That is a useful distinction when evaluating marketing claims.

Bottom line

Biotin is common in beauty supplements, and the most practical safety habit is simple: include supplements when you tell your healthcare team what you take. If a product contains thousands of micrograms of biotin, that is especially important before laboratory testing.
